How It Works

A small device that makes a big difference.

In sleep apnea, your tongue and soft palate collapse backward during sleep, blocking your airway. Oral Appliance Therapy uses a small device to hold your lower jaw forward, keeping the airway open all night.

Without Treatment

Obstructed airway without treatment
  • Airway collapses during sleep
  • Blood oxygen drops repeatedly
  • Chronic fatigue, headaches, health risk

With Oral Appliance

Open airway with oral appliance therapy
  • Jaw held gently forward
  • Airway remains open all night
  • No mask, no machine, no noise

“It is truly amazing. I barely feel like I am wearing a device, my jaw does not feel overly pushed forward and yet it has completely cured my snoring! No teeth displacement or discomfort after wearing for hours at night. It is a godsend and worth every penny!”

Verified Review

Peer-Reviewed Evidence

The science behind oral appliance therapy.

Mandibular advancement devices are backed by decades of clinical research. Here are key findings from peer-reviewed journals.

RCT 2006

Snores per hour dropped from 398 to 17 with a MAD device.

Partners reported significant improvement in their own sleep quality and reduced daytime tiredness.

Cooke & Battagel — European Journal of Orthodontics

Clinical Study 2024

Time spent snoring dropped from 30.7% to 7.5% of the night.

Polysomnographic outcomes confirmed massive reductions in snoring duration for both simple snoring and OSA patients.

Giuntoli et al. — Applied Sciences / MDPI

Systematic Review 2020

18 studies confirm MADs successfully treat primary snoring.

The gold-standard review concluded that scientific evidence strongly supports MADs, consistently yielding positive results and lowering AHI.

Sleep Medicine Reviews

Prospective Trial 2018

Over 65% successful treatment rate with significant snoring improvement.

Patients also reported a sharp decrease in excessive daytime sleepiness after being fitted with a MAD.

Marco-Pitarch et al. — European Archives of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology

Pilot Study 2004

Boil-and-bite MADs showed significant snoring reductions at 1 and 6 months.

Even non-custom, immediately adaptable devices proved a feasible and well-tolerated treatment for heavy snorers.

Vanderveken et al. — Acta Oto-Laryngologica

Treatment questions, answered.

Everything you need to know about treating sleep apnea without a CPAP.

What is oral appliance therapy?
Oral Appliance Therapy (OAT) uses a custom-fitted device — similar to a mouthguard — that you wear during sleep. It gently holds your lower jaw forward, which keeps the airway open and prevents the throat from collapsing. It's a clinically-proven treatment for mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea and is recommended as a first-line alternative to CPAP.
What's the difference between Hushd Avera and Hushd Pro Avera?
The Hushd Pro Avera is a premium device custom-fitted by a sleep dentist, 3D printed from medical-grade nylon with 6 titration positions (up to 11). It's designed for moderate OSA and long-term use, with a 3-year warranty. If you're not ready for a custom device, the Hushd Avera ($129) is an over-the-counter boil-and-bite option you can try tonight — no prescription required.
Do I need a prescription for the Hushd Pro Avera?
Yes. The Hushd Pro Avera is fitted by a qualified sleep dentist who takes an intra-oral scan of your teeth. The scan is sent to Good Sleep Co.'s lab where the device is custom-milled and returned ready to use. We can connect you with a partner dentist in your area — fill out the eligibility form above and we'll guide you through the process.
How comfortable is it to sleep with?
Most patients adapt within 3-7 nights. The Pro Avera is custom-milled to your exact dental profile, so it sits flush against your teeth with no bulky material. It's significantly more comfortable than a CPAP mask — no straps, no air pressure, and no noise. You can talk, drink water, and even close your lips naturally while wearing it.
Is this covered by private health insurance?
Coverage depends on your health fund and level of extras cover. The Hushd Pro Avera is a TGA-registered medical device, which may make it eligible for rebates under some private health plans. We recommend checking with your fund directly. For US patients, the device holds a PDAC K1027 determination for reimbursement.
How long does the device last?
The Hushd Pro Avera is 3D printed from medical-grade Nylon Polyamide Type 12, which is 3x stronger than the leading nylon appliance and independently tested as virtually unbreakable. It comes with a 3-year warranty. With proper care (daily cleaning with Hushd Cleaner), it can last well beyond that.
Can I use an oral device if I also use a CPAP?
Yes. Some patients use an oral device when travelling and CPAP at home, or transition fully to OAT over time. Your sleep physician can advise on the best approach for your specific AHI severity. Many patients who found CPAP intolerable have successfully switched to oral appliance therapy as their primary treatment.
