Fitting and care guide

How to fit and use your Hushd Avera

Hushd Avera fitted on a dental model

Start with what you need, then follow the illustrated steps to mould, wear and care for your mouthpiece. Fitting all three pieces takes about 10 minutes.

Before you start

To fit your Hushd Avera, you will need:

  • Kettle
  • Bowl or cup

Get to know your arches

Your kit contains one upper arch marked U, two lower arches marked L1 and L2, and a storage case. You’ll mould each arch separately.

One upper arch. Two lower arch options.
  • Read through these steps before you begin fitting.
  • Inspect each arch. Do not use it if any part is damaged or missing.
  • Have a timer (your phone is fine) and a bowl of cold water with ice in it ready.

Check suitability first. Avera is intended for adults aged 18 and over who snore. If you have been diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), ask your doctor before using this device.

Mould your Avera

Mould all three pieces, one at a time: U first, then L1, then L2. Use fresh hot water for each piece and never mould the upper and lower arches together.

  1. Step 1 of 4: Heat the upper arch

90°C water, hot but not boiling · 2 minutes

Find the arch marked U. Place it in hot water at 90°C for 2 minutes. The water should be hot but not boiling. Do not boil the device.

  2. Step 2 of 4: Mould it to your upper teeth

Bite with even pressure · 1 minute

Carefully remove the arch from the water, taking care with the hot water and hot material. Line up the centre of the arch with the gap between your two front teeth. Press it up around your teeth, working towards the back, so it sits on your front and back teeth. Then bite down with even pressure for 1 minute.

  3. Step 3 of 4: Set the shape in iced water

Take the arch straight out of your mouth and put it into the bowl of iced water to set the shape.

  4. Step 4 of 4: Repeat for L1, then L2

Mould L1 the same way in fresh hot water: 2 minutes in the water, line up the centre, press it around your lower teeth, bite with even pressure for 1 minute, then set it in iced water. Then do the same with L2.

Mould L2 now, even though you will start with L1, so it is ready when you need it.

Next: how to wear it

How to wear your Avera

Wear U with one lower arch, starting with L1. Do not wear both lower arches together.

Position the upper blocks behind the lower wings

Put in U and L1. Both should feel snug on your teeth. The blocks on the upper arch sit just behind the wings on the lower arch, towards the back of your mouth.

Choose one lower arch to wear with U.

Lower arch L1

Start with L1

L1 brings your lower jaw forward slightly (+1 mm). Wear it with U from your first night.

Lower arch L2

If snoring persists

L2 brings your lower jaw further forward (+3 mm). We recommend switching to L2 if snoring persists. If fit or comfort is a concern, contact our team before changing.

Wear your Avera with your mouth closed. The design still lets you open your mouth slightly while it is in.

If a piece does not hold

If an arch is not holding after a night or two, remould only that piece. You can remould each piece up to 2 more times, so 3 times in total.

  1. Step 1 of 4: Soften it in hot water

Place the piece in hot water at 90°C for 2 minutes, the same as the first fit.

  2. Step 2 of 4: Check it is ready

Before you refit it, check the inside has gone smooth again. When you can no longer see the imprint of your teeth, it is ready to remould.

  3. Step 3 of 4: Refit it and bite

Line up the centre, press it around your teeth, then bite with even pressure for 1 minute.

  4. Step 4 of 4: Set it in iced water

Put it straight into iced water to set the shape.

Next: cleaning and care

Clean and store your Avera

  1. Step 1 of 4: Rinse it every morning

Rinse your Avera with clean water and give it a gentle brush with a soft toothbrush.

  2. Step 2 of 4: Let it dry, then store it

Let it dry, then keep it in its case when you are not wearing it.

  3. Step 3 of 4: Deep clean with Cleaner

For a deep clean, we recommend the Good Sleep Co Cleaner.

  4. Step 4 of 4: Check it before wearing

Inspect it before each use. Do not use it if any part is damaged or missing.

Keep cleaning gentle. Do not use bleach, mouthwash, ammonia or other harsh or abrasive cleaners, and do not soak your Avera in denture tablets.
