What is sleep apnea?

Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder in which breathing is repeatedly interrupted during the night. When a person has sleep apnea, the airways become narrowed or blocked, making it difficult for air to enter the lungs. As a result, brief pauses in breathing called apneas occur.

These pauses can last from a few seconds to more than a minute and may be repeated many times during the night. As a result of apneas, the affected person does not receive enough oxygen, which can have a negative impact on their health and well-being.
